Lap Swimming Etiquette
Sharing Lanes Safely
-
The best way to assure a safe and happy swim is to communicate with other swimmers so you all know the plan.
-
When in doubt ask a Lifeguard for assistance.
Take a minute to observe each of the lanes and choose the lane that best matches your skill level and the speed you will be swimming at.
When you are ready to start swimming, make sure everyone in the lane is aware that you are going to join them.
Sit by the edge of the pool and wait for them to finish a set, or
Stand or hold the wall in the water in the corner of the lane so swimmers can see you have entered.
DO NOT block the + on the wall or otherwise interfere with swimmers completing a turn at the wall.
Watch for swimmers completing flip turns and be sure to stay out of range of their feet.
-
When there are more than two people in a lane, circle swimming is required.
To Circle Swim always stay to the right side of the black line on the bottom of the lane.
-
Avoid stopping in the middle of the pool, this can interfere with other swimmers and cause collisions.
-
Stop only at the wall and once stopped, stay in the corner of the lane, preferably the left hand corner when facing the wall.
-
Faster Swimmers should pass on the left. *Be sure to look for oncoming swimmers.
If you are approaching the wall and another lap swimmer is swimming at a faster rate than you are, pause at the wall to allow the faster swimmer to go by. Move to the corner of the lane and watch for swimmers completing flip turns and be sure to stay out of range of their feet.
Give a signal: the universal signal for passing is to tap the foot of the swimmer in front of you. The slower swimmer should continue to the wall, then pause in the corner to allow the faster swimmer to pass
-
Wait until the swimmer in front of you has passed the backstroke flags before pushing off the wall.
