Instructional Classes at the YK Fitness Center are progressive classes designed to help you learn new skills in a safe, fun environment.

To assure class progressions, registration is required at the beginning of the session to participate.

Class Descriptions

Introduction to Weight Lifting

This 60-minute class will focus on the introductory focuses of weight lifting. This course will equip participants with beginner knowledge to move forward and grow.  This class is great for individuals who do not feel comfortable with all the machines and their functions in our weight room.  Class is open to male/females. No prior weight training experience required. Wear comfortable athletic clothes and tennis shoes.

Judo

This 60-minute class is designed to teach the fundamentals of JUDO.  Participants will develop physical and mental strength and endurance.  Participants will learn to use their body and strength to efficiently defend themselves against any opponent through throws, pins, strangles, and joint locks: all of which will be taught safely in realistic sparring sessions against a resisting opponent.

The Yukon-Kuskokwim Fitness Center is currently offering four different sessions, participants may attend any session that Sensi Polk approves. 

1. Beginner Classes on Fridays 5:45-6:45pm 

2. Intermediate Classes on Fridays 6:45-7:45pm

3. Advanced Classes on Sundays from 7:45-8:45pm

4. "Open Judo" for all levels Saturdays from 3:00-5:00pm

Male Awareness and Mixed Martial Arts

This 60-minute class will develop the principles of effective, safe, and healthy personal self-defense.  This class will also teach the beginning fundamentals of mixed martial arts. This class is males who are aged 16 and above. No experience necessary. Wear comfortable athletic clothes and tennis shoes.

Smart Fit Girls

This 60-minute class will focus physical and mental activities designed to help girls develop their physical, mental and emotional health towards the goal of being smart and strong both physically and mentally. Participants should bring indoor shoes and wear clothes comfortable for working out in. This class is open to girls up to 13 years old.

Beginner Tumbling Tots

This 45-minute class will teach the basic tumbling skills to develop coordination, balance and strength. Participants should wear comfortable, fitted clothing that does not have zippers, buttons or snaps. For their safety participants should not wear jewelry or plastic/metal hair clips.

Intermediate Tumbling Tots

This 60-minute class is open to beginner and intermediate tumblers.  Participants in this class will learn basic tumbling skills to develop coordination, balance and strength with intermediate tumblers beginning to work on advanced skills and floor routines.  Participants should wear comfortable, fitted clothing that does not have zippers, buttons or snaps. For their safety participants should not wear jewelry or plastic/metal hair clips. 

Advanced Tumbling Tots

This 60-minute class is open to advanced tumblers.  Participants in this class will continue to learn tumbling skills and develop coordination, balance and strength with advanced tumblers to work on advanced skills and floor routines.  Participants should wear comfortable, fitted clothing that does not have zippers, buttons or snaps. For their safety participants should not wear jewelry or plastic/metal hair clips. 

Women’s Empowerment and Self-Defense

This 60-minute class will develop the principles of effective, safe, and healthy personal self-defense.  This class will also teach the beginning fundamentals of mixed martial arts. This class is for Females who are ages 16 and above. No experience necessary for this class. Wear comfortable athletic clothes and tennis shoes
